OpenForce & Active Social - The countdown begins.

by Will M on 26 Oct 2008 10:32 PM

Just about 2 weeks left until DotNetNuke OpenForce '08 and the first release of Active Social.  We haven't said much about Active Social because we wanted to make sure the product was ready.  Those of you attending OpenForce will have the first chance at seeing Active Social along with access to a preview release.

Active Social includes the following features:

  • Customizable Profile layouts
  • Customizable Member directory w/ search
  • Activity Feeds for Portals, Profiles and Groups with updates from Ventrian News Articles, DNN Blog, Active Forums and BizModules.
  • Groups with easy to configure template driven layouts.
  • Friends with notifications to email, Active Messaging or Ventrian Private Messages
  • Integrated messaging between users and/or groups
  • Discussions with Profiles and Groups powered by Active Forums.

We have been talking about it for months and our customers have been very patient.  The first complete social networking solution for DotNetNuke is almost here!

    Will,

    This is exciting stuff and looking back at all the comments that were given in the last few months it seems that you have been listening very carefully. Again, an excellent job!!!

    Is Actve Social a new name for Active Profiles? Or is it the name of a new product or suite of products centered around Active Profiles/Forums?

    This is great news Will, how far out is it for public release after showing the preview at OpenForce?

    This sounds very exciting for sure and exactly what we are looking to use for our social site. I am a bit concerned to how the licensing is going to work. We've already bought Enterprise Forums and Profile... Am I going to have to ask our group for more money for an additional license?

    Thanks for the feedback. We are pretty excited too!

    @PalaceGuard
    Active Social is a new product that with include Active Forums and other social networking modules.

    @Duane
    We will have a preview release immediately following OpenForce for a few select customers. The official release will be the first week of December.

    @jbrunken
    Very good question. Customers that currently have Active Profile and Active Forums Enterprise will be able to "trade-in" those licenses for an Active Social license.

    Will,

    Could you please elaborate a bit more where the CRM (Social CRM) fits in?

    Active Social will run side-by-side with Active Forums Enterprise. The earliest we will make an evaluation copy available will be Nov. 18th.

    @Marc
    I will blog more about this later in the week. You will actually start to see this in action with the release of Active Forums 4.2.

    Thanks,

    Will,

    Can you give any more info about how groups will work? Will there be an optional way to display group membership in the PostInfo template in ActiveForum?

    Do you expect an release version of A.S. before the end of the year? Obviously I'm very anxious to get my hands on this!

    Will there be an optional way to display group membership in the PostInfo template in ActiveForum?

    This would be available when viewing the users profile, but I don't see why we couldn't include it for the PostInfo template as well.

    Yes, I expect a public release before the end of the year.

    Wow, this is sounding better and better. Can group membership be bound to roles in any way?

    Do you mean automatically add users of a certain role to a group? Perhaps only letting users in a certain role have access to a group? Maybe you mean just importing users by group into a role to get things started.

    If thats what you are asking then yes.

    We have a "Members" role that users get assigned to when they pay to join our organization (using Ventrian Subscriptions). What I would like to see is the ability to have membership in a group bound to roles so that anyone who is added to our member role automatically joins the "Members" group and anyone removed from the role automatically leaves the group.

    Not a problem. We have that taken care of by allowing you to link a group to roles. At first we were trying to keep groups and roles completely separate, but we found a few ways to allow you to leverage your existing role structure and still keep it flexible and simple.
