Active Forums 4.3 just about ready

by Will Morgenweck on 13 Sep 2010 05:49 PM

This past weekend I decided to have my own Active Forums hackathon.  Friday afternoon I made a list of everything I wanted to accomplish for Active Forums 4.3.  I reviewed the list a couple times, added a few items, removed a few more then got straight to work.  The goal was to have Active Forums 4.3 feature complete by midnight tonight.  Some of you have already noticed a few changes, but you won't see all of them until tomorrow.  Here is the list of what is in Active Forums 4.3.

  • URL Rewriter - http://www.activemodules.com/blogs/will
  • Categories - http://www.activemodules.com/activesocial/kb
  • Topic Priority -  Ability to alter the sort priority of topics based upon a numeric value in addition to date.
  • Performance improvement for retrieving a list of topics.
  • Forum Content Navigator - Allows for browsing the topics in a given forum by categories and/or tags.
  • Security options for Tags, Categories and Priority.
  • Tag cloud control
  • Author list
  • Related topics - Automatic and Assigned Moved to AF 4.4
  • Custom fields - Gives administrators the ability to define custom fields, per forum, that can be required when creating a topic.
You should see examples of all these features in action on this site by the end of the day tomorrow.

    Hey Will,

Looks good. Does the 4.2.7 Version have any URL Rewriting Options for Topics? I noticed that the Forum Posts (like this one) rewrite the URL to the Topic Title. Is this 4.3 at work or available in the existing version?

We are running 4.3 on this site. Active Forum 4.3 will be the first release with URL Rewriting.

I see that links to topics from the active topics view still have default.aspx (and that when you click on the link there is not - as of yet! - a 301 redirect to the friendly URL).

    Fantastic. Will really does rock!

On my wish list: abily to start a new topic with predefined subject and tag(s). This could be via a stored proc or API call amd link.

A question on the Knowledgebase "template. It APPEARS that the bold items on the left are categories (like Administration). Right?

Umder the categories it appears that there are tags abd when clicked you see al topics with that tag on the right.

There are also topics on the left and when clicked display that topic on the right.

If this is the case, do we only see topics on the left when it is not associated with a tag? If so, how are the tags and topics onthe ledt sorted? s this based on the priority of the topic? I.e the tag has the priority of the highest topic in the rag group? Or do tags also have an assigned priority?

Larry, very good questions. Keep in mind that the view you see in the knowledge base is work in progress.
It APPEARS that the bold items on the left are categories (like Administration). Right?

    Correct.
Umder the categories it appears that there are tags abd when clicked you see al topics with that tag on the right.

I think you see the Community Category with the word Community underneath. That is actually a topic that has been assigned the category that is in a sub forum that hasn't been open yet. It should be visible. You are clicking on the link, AF is blocking access and redirecting you to the list of topics.

There are also topics on the left and when clicked display that topic on the right.

    Correct.

If this is the case, do we only see topics on the left when it is not associated with a tag?

In this particular configuration, you will only see topics that have been assigned a category.

If so, how are the tags and topics onthe ledt sorted?

Categories can be assigned a sort order. Topics can also be assigned a priority. The priority can be any numeric value. The default for all topics is 0. The default sort order for listing topics in AF 4.3 will be Pinned, Priority, Date Created. If you want an old topic closer to the top then then assign it any number greater than 0. If you want to bury a topic you can give it a negative value.

If not already there then I would strongly suggest to add a canonical link element as the pages can be accessed thru friendly url and non friendly. Looks promising looking forward to the release

Ok.. This is getting very close to what I had envisioned. The community page and the forum page are now duplicate according to me. The default view of the forum page should be something like the community page. Middle section should show the aggregate of all forum activity. By clicking on the left forum link the middle section should only display the threads of that forum. Ajax would be good for this one. If I click on Active Social - the group header- it should show all the forums under it. But if I click on the individual forum the view should change to the forum viewer type.

This is good. Very good. Muaahhhhaaaaaa

    Will,

Are you storing the data for the tags in tables in which only you store the data or are you using the tag tables that were introduced in the DNN framework by the DNN corporation?

I sure hope that you're using the DNN framework tables because this will create the oportunity to integrate all tags from different DNN modules in one tag cloud.

    Hey Will,

Just a note that in 4.2.7, the first new post after an app restart will generate an error from Active Editor being unable to load, but subsequent posts will be ok.

Just wondering if this is a known issue to be fixed for 4.3? Also, are we still on track for the ability to use the default site editor (eg. Telerik) to be operational in 4.3? This was the issue where it was doubling up id tag data, causing smilies and attachments not to work. I haven't tried in 4.2.7 because it was targeted for 4.3.

One other note would be that I find the AJAX functionality in 4.2.x to be broken within AS group discussions; I've been having to use the plain text editor to work around it. if ActiveEditor is used, on post submission I'll get the Ajax "spinning" dialog for a while, then the editor reloads with no content and no post made. Doesn't happen in the normal forums.

Never been able to reproduce this consistently. It's because the localization cached hasn't been loaded for the editor.

This was actually fixed in AF 4.2.7. Active Editor was also updated for chrome support.

Posting topics doesn't use AJAX. We have had to troubleshoot something similar before. The problem is usually caused by a conflict on the page or URL rewriting. It appears to be working fine on activesocial.com as well.

No Marc. We may add an option for it later, but right now we have too many customers on older versions of DotNetNuke. Plus, we have had tags in place for a couple years now. I don't want to introduce any kind of upgrade problems.

Indeed, this most certainly will create upgrade problems which I understand you would like to avoid. I just hope that you will be able to provide a way to pass the current tags in Active Forums into these tables as this would open up the possiblity to integrate content from different DNN modules in one tag cloud.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

In the AS KnowledgeBase confuration on theis site AF 4.3), how would sub-tiopics be handled? Would they be displayed on the left indented under the topic? Would they be listed on the right beneath the topic when displayed on the right (i.e. agter a topic is clcked on the left)?
