Patrick, I wanted to set the record straight in the other thread regarding WordPress support, but it’s now locked so I’m posting here.
You are confused about WP tech support so let me explain the difference here between DNN and WP.
With WordPress there is only one version, this version is available to anyone and everyone for free. There are no paid versions because it’s a true open-source platform. There is a separate WordPress corporation that provides commercial services related to WP in terms of hosting and support. That’s how they make their money, by providing commercial services, not from software sales.
The VIP support prices you quoted are for large customers who tend to be of the scale of the New York Times. If you need high level support and need to modify the core to support some specialized application, like maybe hosting 1,000,000 blogs across many servers then that level of support is for you. It’s obviously priced accordingly so that they are not supporting small scale users.
The average Joe like myself or you will never need that type of support for these reasons:
A. WordPress is a very robust and stable platform and it just works. I’ve never had any problems with an upgrade ever. It also has excellent documentation online.
B. Practically every hosting company provides WordPress support for free as part of your hosting fees.
C. There is free support available through WordPress.org forums as well as through hundreds of different smaller sites.
D. People typically only need support when installing a theme or a plug-in and if these are commercial products then the company that developed it provides free support as part of your purchase. However since it's such a friendly community, even developers who create and give away free plug-ins will be happy to help you for free.
In short, there is absolutely no reason why a typical user like the people who post here will ever need that high level (expensive) support that you referenced.
Whatever platform you choose is up to you, but I felt compelled to clear up the misconceptions that you had for the benefit of all.
Have a nice day. |
