Hey guys
Is anyone hosting their AS/AF website with PowerDNN? How is it? Is it really fast? Do they allow Mail Connector? Can I run three DNN websites with AS/AF/MC in one plan?
Other modules I am using are Ventrian, UVG and UMG.
Please let me know.
Thank you.

I have used PowerDNN for the last 5 years and they have good support. WRT speed it is hard to say as I have not tried others. With PageBlaster configured I am happy with the performance of PokerDIY (although for logged in users it is quite slow unfort.) I don't know about Mail Connector - you should ask those questions over at PowerDNN (also to test their support speed responses). I use Ventrian, UVG and UM too... |

Frozen, Same here...have been using PowerDNN for the past year and I've had up to 3 websites on one instance of DNN all using AF/AS with great results. I'm also using UMG on one of the sites...I don't use the Mail Connector so... |

Frozen - do you mean shared hosting? I have a dedicated server with PDNN and could tell you about that. I recommend PDNN for anyone setting up a DNN site in shared hosting especially if you are not an expert. They are very helpful and other hosts I have used with DNN just shrug. As to speed sites on my server seem faster but probably more wishful thinking than any test I did to know for sure. I have not seen any real tests between exact copies of DNN sites on different hosts - that would be interesting. thanks, Will |

Thank you guys.
I am hosting with 3essentials but they want me to pay $100 more because my website is growing. I honestly think there is something wrong in the DB. Also I am told that when I turn MC on, it consumes lot of resources. Anyway, I have to pay more or move on.
I really don't make any money of off my websites hence the hesitation. I cannot pull the plug because I have put lot of work to make it grow not to mention the money.
Anyway, I am thinking of PDNN's shared business hosting. Lets see if that works.

Also I am told that when I turn MC on, it consumes lot of resources. This all comes down to the number of forums you have setup with the MC. Think about using a desktop mail client when you click that Send/Receive button for a POP3 account and you have to wait for it to complete. Now multiply that some process by the number of forums you have setup using the MC. It can be resource intensive. |

Can someone please tell me which of the following plan is "better" than the other? M 200 ( http://3essentials.com/servers.asp#top ) and Power 1 ( http://www.powerdnn.com/DedicatedServers/Overview/tabid/291/Default.aspx ) I have 6 dnn websites. Only one is big (4000 active members). Others are in their initial stages (65 to 300 members). Thanks a lot for your time. |

I have to say upfront that I have been on dedicated PowerDNN servers for several years now. I have operated all three sizes of servers for myself and my clients. The only issue for me is that I pay extra for an additional 1GB of RAM. I am just not sure how well either company's server will run on 1GB. I have about 50 sites on the PowerDNN 1 server but none gets that much traffic. I don't run PDNN standard control panel and I manage my own SmarterTools installation for Mail, Stats and Support Desk. I really like SmarterTools, but I am not sure the cost when you get them from PDNN. I have my own guy in India who does most of my server management, control panel upgrades, etc. He is really great! It looks like 3essentials doesn't allow Remote Desktop. If that is true, then that is a total deal killer for me. I have to be abel to get on the server to do stuff. Hope this helps. |

I have a shared hosting plan with PowerDNN and I use mail connector. I did have it setup with PowerDNN's mail server but have migrated my email to Google Apps due to my mail accounts being spammed. I do not have any problems either way with MC but my membership is not nearly as large as yours. You are going to run into daily email limits with Google Apps for any emails outside of your domain though. I also have to agree with the others here, if you don't know DNN well, PowerDNN is the way to go. Their support is awesome, even for someone on shared hosting. |

Getting a server is a whole new thing to learn and deal with. It is no small task. Setting up domains, dns, security, etc. And it can be very stressful when things go wrong. I have 6 dnn websites. Are they in separate installations? If yes, and you have clients paying you for the server, then I would think more about a server, if no a shared plan would be a lot cheaper. One thing with PDNN is the add-ons (control suite, backup, more memory, etc.) can really add up. That is the way most of them present it though. It looks cheap until you realize all you need to make it really go. The PDNN control suite is really sweet though. I do my daily backups with Jungle Disk which is a really good bargain, is off site, and easy to use. You should be able to cut deals on whatever you want to do. Haggle. |

I got signed up for the server edition and it looks really great. I also signed up for the free Dropbox at https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTEwMTIzNDM2OQ to do some file sync between my laptop and desktop. The link above is some kind of referral link. But it looks like it just adds more disk space to my account and the account of anyone who signs up using the referral link. BTW, is anyone on a PDNN PowerGrid Cloud? I am looking at a pretty large community launch and I am considering an entry level cloud so that I can scale pretty quickly. |

I have several shared hosting accounts with PowerDNN and had a dedicated server with them for awhile too (former employer). If you plan on the site being around for a long enough period of time I think the best bet is the co-locate deal with PowerDNN. But that means you would have to pony up for the server out of your pocket. |

There is one key difference between dedicated servers and colocation servers. Dedicated servers tend to be owned and rented out, while a colocation server is one that you own. You basically find a data center and buy your own server and put it in a datacenter.
In my experience I have found co-location is more expensive for just one server. The more server's you have the more money you save. For one server you may end up paying more. If you do co-locate one make sure it is powerful one so you can host many sites or several vms to make it worth.

Will S., thanks for the Jungle Disk recommendation. I had been trying to decide on a good option for that with my PDNN servers. I have really liked JD and have been able to restore the db for a site from the file stored there. it also let's you restore individual files which is nice. JD is only about $8/month, plus it is off site. Be forewarned that the first backup of your server using JD can take days. Then a few hours per night after that. I also do a nightly backup with Plesk on my bigger, more active sites, and weekly for lesser ones. These I store on the PDNN server and do not include in the JD process. So I feel pretty well covered for not too much $. When I upgrade DNN and AS I hope to store more files from the sites on JD/S3. thanks |

PowerDNN has a good guide to setting up GoogleApps to work with their servers. It is located here: https://support.powerdnn.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=142
There are a couple of other good articles also, just do a search for "Google Apps" and they will show up.
I created a quick and dirty guide to using Google Apps with Active Forus Mail Connector here: http://sgchs.us/Files/tabid/101/Default.aspx
The issue I had was Google sees all email being from the host. This guide shows you the settings required to have the "From" address set to the Forum email address.
Good Luck.

Currently still in beta, but has been around for over a year now. It's worth a look at: http://dnnamazons3.codeplex.com/I don't know of any other ones. I'm currently on 5.5 and don't think there's any core S3 integration yet. |

Something to keep in mind about PowerDNN.... I just touched base with their support desk to ask about moving my DNN site (on one of their shared accounts) from an IIS6 server to an IIS7 server (as I would like to use the Vanity URLs feature in AF 4.3 which currently requires IIS7). However I got the following reply from PowerDNN: We do offer IIS7 on some of our shared servers. However the server that you are currently on is running SQL server 2008 where as the servers that are running IIS7 are currently running SQL Server 2005 and it is impossible to migrate a site whose database is formatted in SQL 2008 to SQL 2005 due to compatibility issues. I'm currently not aware when or if we are going to configure any new servers that are both running IIS7 and SQL Server 2008. Please let us know if you need any further assistance. So if you are on SQL Server 2008 you won't be able to get an IIS7 shared hosting account with PowerDNN. [aside: I have had a PowerDNN shared account for over a year and have been happy with its performance (I saw an immediate and considerable imporvement in page load times as soon as I migrated to their services.] |
