I would like some feedback on the features you would like to see in Active Social 2.0.  This will not be a large feature release, but we do have some time to add a couple nice features.  I would like to have this release complete before the end of July.  Please only select 3 features from the list.  I understand you may want all of them, but checking all isn't really going to help speed things along.  Keep in mind the big release will in Q4 of this year.

Instead of an Open Network, I would like a friends system that is usable. I.e. a way for two people who want to have a friends-only network to actually become friends with each other. Perhaps when you say 'Member Search Enhancements', that could be a part of it. A person could allow their profile summary to show up in search results, while having their full profile be "friends-only".

I wish I could say I'm interested in any of the features above - none of that interests me. I'd much rather have more robust handling of photos for example and all the bug fixes required to make that function stable. I'd like to have way more flexibility on the existing journal. Finally, I'd like to be able to have flexibility in how the user profile is laid out including the ability to add new tabs in there. That's my top 3 wishlist.

This is possible now. This is for groups but the concept is the same: http://dnnosphere.com/videos/player...group-tabs

So will what are the results of this poll in terms of what the roadmap will include? The top 4 - 5 looks like nice features.

I know it is probably way too late, but it would sure be nice to setup the capability to sort Journal Types that get displayed in the Community Summary; especially for those of use who create a good number of custom journal types.

So what were the product plans that resulted from this survey? Looks like one way friends, multiple group admins, and journal RSS got the most votes. The top five look good to me.

Thanks for all the feedback! Looks like one-way relationships, journal rss and multiple group admins are the most important. We will probably also add the option to disable friends. With DotNetNuke 6.1 still on track for release by the end of the year, plus a new forum module later this summer, I think those four items will make for a good Active Social 2.0 release.

Will, can we not let see group admins/owners not see the user's IP address? Only the website Admin should be able to see that.  Is this possible, if not, can you please sneak this one in too?

    Thanks.

Is this just incorporating AF into DNN Core as a new forum module, or will there be some significant enhancements? One capability that has been discussed for a couple of years now is related to using templates to create a Yahoo! Answers type of Q&A area. Just curious if this kind of stuff is slated for any near-term releases.

    Thanks.

    Hi Will,
What options did you have in mind for "Group Performance Improvements" ? Would it be possible to have the tab click function like Profiles? i.e no postback ?

Could the "one-way-friendship" be implemented in a way like it's done with Circles in Google+? I have to say that for me, Facebook and Twitter are going to die soon now that I know how Circles in Google+ work. It's by far the smartest way of managing your contacts and permissions of who should see what and it would be great to see ActiveSocial / DotNetNuke 6.1 being able to do it the same way.

If Will gave me a shopping cart for new enhancements, this is what I would choose :

    1. Multiple Group Administrators
    2. Group Search Enhancements
    3. Core Search Integration for Groups

And whilst you've opened the hood on Groups, throw in Group Performance Improvements for good measure...

Ohh and so we are keeping with the times, how about One-way relationships (followers/fans)...

    Thanks Will

Can we please get an update? Can we expect AS integrated with DNN 6.1?

Also, outside of having access to releases before AS is integrated with core DNN what are the advantages of renewing a license? Will migrations from AS 1.9.x (or 2.x) be seemless once AS is included into the core DNN?

When DNN bought AM clear communication to the legacy customer base was identified as a key to a successful integration. Can we please get an update? Are you still tracking to AS 2.0 before November as indicated in another thread? Can we expect AS in DNN 6.1?

My last AM license expires soon and I don't know if renewing is worthwhile. Can you please give some guidance?

The focus for DotNetNuke 6.1 is on mobile. DotNetNuke 6.2 will focus on social integration and is planned for early 2012. Right now my team is working on finishing up the new forum module. We are still planning to have an Active Social release before the end of the year, hopefully in November.

As most of us expected when the announcement was made six months ago, the acquisition of AM by DNNCorp will most likely result in some really nice improvements for DNN. But as we also expected, this will only benefit people in the future and will provide no near-to-mid-term benefit for those of us who invested our time and money with the hopes of getting a solid platform that would continue to evolve rapidly. In fact it has been and continues to be a real detriment to the existing AM Community (what little is left of it). The practical evolution of AS stopped at least six months ago (maybe longer) and while we might see some major improvements we have no real idea as to when. Basically we are being asked to put our projects on hold for 12 - 15 months, get nothing, but keep renewing our licenses for support. Not a really great deal for us. But it is what is is and there is really nothing we can do about it...other than vent a little every now and then. So I am venting a little now. I just don't want anyone at DNN Corp to think I am OK with how this is playing out and so I have to at least say how things are looking and feeling from my perspective.

I realize that not everyone share's my perspective. I realize that for some applications AS can function as is. But for my main application I really need a lot of the promised features that were on the roadmap. And without them I am really stuck. And being stuck is a really bad feeling. What is worse is wondering should I launch and then have to answer to my community members as to why I cannot implement the functionality they need, or to even give them a realistic time frame for implementation.

Statements from Will that just don't seem to be adding up. At first it was that AS integration would be in DNN 6.1. Then it was maybe 6.1. or 6.2. But we also heard that Will would be blogging on a fairly frequent basis. You have made a few posts, but none related to the direction or status of AS in DNN Core. I really just feel abandoned by AM and DNN Corp at this point.

    From Will...

As I’ve mentioned before, all existing Active Social functionality will be available as part of DotNetNuke Community
Edition. At this time, Active Social integration is planned to be available later this year with DotNetNuke 6.1. Keep in
mind this is subject to change, but I will be blogging on a fairly frequent basis to keep everyone up to date.

Yes. Active Social 2.0 will be released before November.

Now you are saying that DNN 6.1 focus is on mobile and AS is targeted for 6.2. Can you say if the mobile focus is going to benefit anyone in the CE or is it only for paid versions? Is AS really going to make it into the CE with all of the other improvements to Registration, Login, Profiles, Messaging, etc?

I guess I will get back to work now on my half-baked community site that used to have a lot of promise.

    Cliff,
You aren't the only one frustrated and you have made some very valid points. I have tried to be very careful about communicating dates and setting expectations. Even in my original blog post back in March I stated DNN 6.1, but that it was subject to change. Anytime this has come up on dotnetnuke.com or here, I have tried to make it clear that it would be 6.1 OR 6.2. As I've stated before, I didn't sell Active Modules or join DNN Corp just so we could bundle our modules and call it a day. There is huge potential to help people, just like you Cliff, build extraordinary websites. If we had done what many people suggested, you would still be in the same position of trying to piece together a solution. People are trying to build new websites each and every day. Those that need something today may have to make difficult choices. Those that have been around Active Modules for the past 6 years, looked into the recent improvements with DotNetNuke 6.0 and 6.1, may decide to be a little more patient. Great things are happening!

I can't give any dates, but can't stop anyone from trying to see the big picture. At Shaun's keynote last November he stated that DotNetNuke was committed to Cloud, Mobile and Social. DotNetNuke 6.0 was scheduled to be released in early June. Actual release date was in July. At WebConnections in May, Shaun stated again that DotNetNuke was committed to Cloud, Mobile and Social. He also stated after 6.0, we were committed to one release a month to quickly address any issues with 6.0. DotNetNuke 6.0.1 was released August 24th. DotNetNuke 6.0.2 was released October 5th. It was one week late due to scheduling issue, but our Engineering team had the package ready on time. Our annual conference is the first week of November. We released DotNetNuke 6.1 Beta yesterday. Very likely you will see another release in early November. So, DotNetNuke 6.0 was released in July, DotNetNuke 6.1 is currently in beta, DotNetNuke 6.2 planning is already underway.

As far as the very old and tiring topic of whether Active Social will be PE or CE, various members of DNN Corp have stated this numerous times in press releases, blog posts, conferences, user groups meetings and forum posts. DotNetNuke needs Active Social functionality in CE to remain relevant.

When I joined DNN Corp, I wasn't really in a position to talk about the roadmap or our development plans. That has recently changed so I hope to be blogging more about the roadmap and direction of DotNetNuke.

I hope to be blogging more about the roadmap and direction of DotNetNuke.

Really looking forward to this. In my case, Cliff couldn't have said it any better, I have a lot of the very same feelings. In the past, I had said I would be putting off my upgrade to 6.0. Well, I actually went back on my word, and I have fully embraced it. I have even enjoyed integrating a lot of it's functionality into my site (including into AS/AF). I am very excited to show what I've done with DNN6 AND AS/AF, but it's still incomplete and clunky. I've come to look forward to AM integration into DNN. I've accepted that fact, that it is happening, and I'm now planning for it, and will do all I can with it once it happens.

Like others though, my license will be up soon, and I'm scared to death when I migrate from AS/AF to DNN Core. I have plans to purchase support just for that reason due to my customizations with AF/AS, but I can't reasonably make any plans for that until a solid roadmap is in place by DNN. With that, I'll be looking forward to any and all information you (Will) provide that effects us.
    Cheers! Jeff

@Will thanks for the reply. I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't speaking of the AS/AF integration into DNN CE. I am fully onboard that these tools are being integrated into CE. I shouldn't have switched up in mid-stream on my post, but my question was about the mobile focus for DNN 6.1. Do you have any insight into what parts of these mobile initiatives will make it into CE. I read a blog post somewhere and it gave me the impression that the mobile stuff would mainly be available in paid versions first. Having the perfect storm of real mobile capability with AS/AF in the DNN Core will be awesome for sure.

@Jeff you got me toying with a DNN 6 upgrade on my site. But I definitely got a good backup first.

Just curious if AS 2.0 is releasing soon. Having multiple Group Admins would be really helpful so that I can assign myself as an Admin to assist new Admins with Group functionality. One-way relationships will also be helpful in attracting some of the niche market experts who can gain "followers" on my site. Not sure what Journal RSS is but I am sure it can be helpful.

Thanks for any status update you can provide.

Would you mind to say if it is reasonable to wait for blog feature in AS2.0 or better to look for third party module? Actually it is better if ActiveSocial will include it.

and btw Karma option for Activeforum will be good as well

Honestly I don't think that AM / DNN Corp has any intentions of building out functionality like blogging into AS. I think their intent is to just publish and manage / control flow of information that is created by other modules. Will M. made this pretty clear when there were discussions about media modules, photo galleries, etc. I think some of the initial modules like photos and events that were included in AS were there to get you out of the gate. I am not sure if they initially thought of building out lots of these types of features and then their intentions changed over time, or if those were more like teaser modules. Maybe they originally intended to provide a lot of functionality into AS, but now I don't think that is the case. So I don't think they will be improving upon those initial modules. This is not intended to be critical of AM / DNN Corp. Just stating my perspective. They really want the community of third party developers to create and integrate those types of modules.

With that said, I would recommend digArticle at www.dignuke.com for a blog / article / news publishing platform. Mike is doing a great job there and has already done quite a bit of AS integration.
