Hi

I have am using AS as a private members social network ionside a larger site. Any user can register  for the site as a whole, but I only want users who are members of a specific security role to appear in the AS "members list"

is this possible?

You can set a role for members other than registered users.

Please can you tell me where I make this setting change.

AS Control Panel - Members...set membership role under Community Role section. You could set this to a new role "Special Members". Of course - you will need to make sure you have a way to add those members to that role. Through the DNN Admin User management or some other way.
