Regardless of what I just said during my rant about the AS 2.0 release and the integration with the DNN Core, I am still planning to launch my site. My first launch will be a Seed Member launch with free membership. I have some partners ready to help me with that. That will be followed by a Charter Membership launch with a one-time payment. That will be followed by a public launch with an annual payment for membership.

For my Seed Membership Launch I want to stipulate that members can forfeit their membership if they are not actively participating in the community. I just don't want to have people signup with accounts since they are free and then not participate until the community grows larger.

So I need a method of gathering metrics related to a member's activity on the site. What tools are already in place in AS / AF to help gather this information? What tools might be the most straightforward to implement on a limited budget.

Does anyone have any metrics that they would share either in concept or code? Are there some things I could pull into some reports using the core DNN Reports module?

The second part of this is to acknowledge Seed and Charter members with badges on their profile. Does anyone have this in place on their site? Any ideas on the best way to implement this?

Thanks for any ideas you might have!

Community recognition, user metrics and gamification are very complicated solutions. I haven't seen anything yet for DotNetNuke, but I know of several solution providers that have built custom applications using Active Social. Just to set some expectations, these systems usually cost big money. This is a really hot area for businesses right now and it comes with a price tag. DNN Corp actually built their own solution for DotNetNuke.com and we've actually considered making it into a product. I was also looking into building a module for this several months ago, but again, it is complicated and really difficult to build a solution that is flexible. Most communities or businesses have very specific needs which is why most are custom built.

Building a basic system wouldn't be that difficult, especially if you are going to rely heavily on the Active Social Journal. I have also seen systems built off of the DNN Event Log data, but that is a little more complicated. The hardest part is defining what you want to capture and how you intend to use it. Pretty much everything you could want is in the DotNetNuke database. Maybe a scheduled job to harvest data along with the reports module would meet your needs.

There are also a few third-party services starting to offer this functionality, but it does come with a price. Google gamification or user behavior tracking and you should get some good results.

I agree that with the diversity of sites it might be a challenge to abstract out a solution that could be applied across as many types of social DNN sites as possible. I have a pretty good module developer who has built some complex dnn modules for custom applications. Maybe this is an area I should investigate for a public module.

I went to http://gamification.com/ and followed a few of their articles to other sites. I downloaded a white paper from http://bunchball.com and hope to get some ideas from there.

I might be interested in investigating any current solutions such as the ones you mentioned that are using Active Social. Can you point to any of those? I might look at a temporary solution for my Seed Membership launch and then other options after the Charter Membership launch.

I did check out the DotNeNuke site and looked that the Community Recognition area. It was cool to see myself between David O and Tony Valenti for lifetime points. I wish I could get some credit for the roughly 600 posts I had on the old asp.net forums.
