I mean like if they are a paying member or received some sort of award, were a sponsor, etc., they could receive some sort of icon to display on the left panel of the profile under their photo.

Will S. I know you don't like the custom solutions... but you can do this with a custom module now... and add it into a template using the .18 currently unsupported feature Will M. posted about.
