I am currently in the initial stages of opening my social site to the world and am realizing how the Members tab can help me immensely with a simple tweak:

The members list already has this capability. That is what we have on our community page and on the active social demo site.

Sorry Will.. i have seen that. This is not exactly what i was suggesting. I need to see both, at will (no pun intended) and thus an active option directly on the members page to quickly flip between active and not active is what i need.. Thoughts? thanks.

We will be adding filter options on the list itself early next year. If you need something like this now, I would suggest copying your members page and adding an instance of the members list that only shows users online. Then update the template or add the text you want on the pages to toggle between the two.
