    • Type of Feedback: Something I want
Just checking to see if you thought it would be doable to have the new AS 1.9 Journal Filter by type to be checkbox driven to allow multiple selections. For instance I might want a section that has ALL new Group activity, like Groups Created, Groups Updated, etc.

Not sure how difficult this would be. I guess it doesn't have to be a checkbox, but could be multiselect dropdown or listbox.

if so, i hope this is a drop-down with checkboxes to reduce the screen space required. As it is, it very intrusive.

This is a matter of opinion. Just like pretty much anything we do, you will be able to customize it to meet your needs. Pretty much all lists in Active Social are now unordered list elements. We've done this so that people that think a drop drop down box with hidden values is more user friendly than a list of visible selections can customize it as they like and vice-versa.

Also, Cliff was talking about a feature in the Social View Settings, not the list of journal items.

More than opinion, this is basic screen real-estate best practices. Less clutter, and then no empty 2-3" wide gap all the way down the left side of the display. Sorry if you don't like my suggestion, but anything that cuts down on items needed to customize the better.  thanks for possibly reconsidering. Perhaps a poll to see what everyone thinks? I don't mind being wrong, but having designed thousands of screens over the years, this just seems like a no-brainer.

Yes I was speaking of the Social View Settings to allow the Admin to multi select what gets shown in a particular Journal instance.

But... I see where you are coming from. See the attached pic of my Social Summary page. I know I can trim down the right side content some but I still don't really have enough space in the center pane if I place the Journal Filter on the left. If this were a dropdown above the content it might provide a better use. Not sure.

Would there be a way to allow the Social Summary input form to wrap? As you can see this rendering is not working well in Google Chrome.

I don't know the best solution, but it seems like there needs to be some flexibility. But I understand that with flexibility comes other potential issues.

It's not a matter of whether I like or dislike your suggestion and it's not a matter of who's right or wrong.  It's your opinion and there is nothing wrong with that.  Your "basic screen real-estate best practices" are not going to be the same for everyone.  If I build my site around the journal and I know I can customize the templates, I would probably put more items under those journal filters(like a lot of customers have already).  However, if I'm using a packaged skin that is a fixed width I may want to find ways to better consolidate space.   Also, if you wanted to get creative like goBlanks, you could do a lot of fancy UI work with what we have in place now.  I could also turn off the filters from the default view and move them to a custom view so I could better control their display as well. My point is, if we went in removed the list the way it is now and replaced it with a javascript/css drop down someone else would then say, "Hey, where did the easy to navigate list of journal items go?" We have to cater to a couple thousand customers, that are trying to cater to several thousand more. We do put a lot of thought and consideration into every decision we make and try keep a good balance.

Keep in mind that Active Social is almost two years old now and we have had over 40 releases.  There is also a lot of history that goes into our decisions.  Believe it or not, and maybe a few customers will back me up, but with Active Social 1.2 we released a really detailed theme that had a lot of custom UI elements.  Some customers loved it and we thought it was great.  However, we also had customers that thought it was too much and didn't easily adapt to standard DotNetNuke skins.  So a couple thousand dollar UI overhaul was gradually removed as default, but we also made hundreds of improvements to the UI/Skinning/Template process that have been praised by more than criticized.

Any way, this now way off topic and not even related to the original request.
