I was wondering if the template has changed for Private Messages in this last release? I'm getting tokens showing in my templates and the layout looks like it's missing some css compared with the version that I saw in Will's blog.

Yes, that template in particular did change significantly. Copy MessageCompose.ascx from /activesocial/config/templates/messages to the messages folder of your themes directory.
