Feature Overview - New Active Profile template engine

by Will M on 10 Oct 2008 10:42 PM

The new Active Profile template engine not only makes it easier for you to create a custom layout, but it also makes it much easier for you to add new functionality.  I am working on a set of templates for ActiveModules.com this weekend.  My goal is to create a profile page for customers where you can access your sales history, support tickets and licenses.  This information will only be accessible by the profile owner and our staff.  I'm setting this up in a tab style interface which is security sensitive.  The tab control is included with the new Active Profile and will allow you to do the same thing or something similar.

What does this functionality really mean to you?  You will be able to easily extend Active Profile without modifying the core source code.  Obviously the functionality I'm adding does require programming, but we do plan to make the capabilities we build for our site available for download.  The new template engine will allow you to load your own ASP.NET Server and User Controls and very shortly other DotNetNuke controls and modules.

Will, this sounds great. Thanks for the extra mile you all are going to build out this SN platform for DNN. I have seen some really nice SN platforms, but they have been outside of DNN and have a big investment of time, energy and $$ in DNN that I cannot walk away from at this point. So I decided to focus on SEO, SEM and eCommerce, and wait it out ans see when someone was going to really get DNN onboard with SN.

So now I am at the point where I have lots going on the SEO and eCommerce world with DNN and it looks like my desire to build out full-featured SN sites with DNN is about to become a reality. I am working with clients on SEO and blueprinting my SN sites. Fortunately I have built out a couple of SN sites to about 80% complete so I am not having to start from scratch.

What would be nice is if you all have the opportunity to write up some white papers on what you envision as the optimum implementation of your modules into a SN platform. I know this is just one more task to add to the long list, but it could go a long way to showing the market how to use your modules.

If you are interested in a joint effort on this let me know.

Thanks again.

Hi Cliff,
Writing up a whitepaper would be a great idea. We are also going to begin using Active Profile on our site early next week. I think what you are going to see is a completely different way of using Active Profile (this is a good thing). We are also working on another site that will really showcase all of our social networking capabilities.

I'm really excited about the direction we are taking with Active Profile. Starting next week you will be able to see how DotNetNuke and Active Modules can provide you with the best social networking solution in a .NET environment.
