It's really pretty easy. I'm hoping to encourage Pensten to make some changes to the content he sends into the Journal. I would love to see this evolve into a journal template that actually shows thumbnails of the video and plays in plays using UVG's embedded player. (Facebook style)

Still this is a great start and it's cool to see another module vendor support Active Social out of the box.

BTW - I beta tested UVG4. The record from webcam feature is pretty darn cool. Just hope you can keep the Flash Media Server at the free developer level....up to ten connections...anything more requires a VERY expensive upgrade from Adobe.

(How can people charge that much for software anymore?)

Can you please start a thread there so I can show my support to this feature?

    Thanks.

    Few things I would add:

    1) I would like to see "See Video" instead of "Read More."
    2) Comments left on Journal for the Video Entry should be integrated with UVG Video comments so there are no two sets of different comments. One on Journal/Profile and one on UVG. (This maybe limited)
    3) The Read entry is purposeless.

    EDITED TO ADD

The video title should be displayed in the journal entry instead of the video description.

I haven't tested this myself, but you should be able to change the way it is displayed in using the journal templates. As you can see in Steven's video, there are templates for the entry. Modify them for your needs.

Thanks for sharing this. Very helpful.

Sorry if the following is unrelated...

I've used UVG for a short while then I had to stop using it because of the cost. I wonder how people are dealing with this cost issue (video hosting)? I used Amazon S3 but it is still expensive once the # of views grow relative big.

    1. Yes, I'll plan to create a tutorial on modifying a journal template
    2. This is a perfect example of why AM plans to release a comment control.
    3. Yep
    4. Agreed.

I'm working on a post for Pengsten about some of these changes along with a recommendation for passing in the embed code to show the video.  Once I post it I'll link it here so folks interested in this integration can show their support for a more comprehensive integration.

So the costs were related to bandwidth not storage?  I'm planning to do a few things with my install:

    1. Limit registered users to posting only YouTube or other "hosted" videos
    2. Restrict uploading of videos to Premium members and set a quota.

If you look at FB videos.....most of the ones I see on my FB wall were already posted somewhere else....then people use FB to "show off" the vid.

Let YouTube or Vimeo pay for the video costs....

Here is a quick mock up of what I'd like to propose for journal and content to Pengsten....I don't know how much (if any) is possible....but wanted to gather some feedback from the AM community so we can ask once.

We need to be careful with any third-party module sending structured data to the journal. This is why we have templates and provide properties for the third-parties to use in the API. Once you start sending formatted data then you lose your template capabilities.
    1) You don't want the third-party to send data to match a certain layout.
    2) You want the third-party to send the necessary pieces so that you can format however you like.
    3) All we can do is provide suggestions on how to use the API. If you want to add pre-formatted content then you certainly can, but it isn't recommended.
    4) If the API doesn't provide the necessary properties so that the output can be formatted by the templates then we need to know so we can make adjustments.

Those mock-ups look great! Looks like all we would need is the url for the thumbnail, video and code for the inline player. I believe UVG is already sending a URL which contains the video ID. We could probably even just parse that URL to extract the ID and then get the thumbnail and video links. Then all we would need is the code to embed the inline player and Pengsten doesn't have to change anything with his journal implementation.

Perfect.  The embed code is pretty standard.

So what's happening? Pengsten has nothing to do at his end? We (you ) have to come up with the template that will show the video in the journal?

I would really like to see the videos pop up like the pictures do (do not like changing pages, unless necessary). Click on it to make it smaller again...leave a comment. (unfortunately, journal pictures do not the comments features)

Can this be done at AS side?

I am using the latest AS/AF/DNN available.
    Thanks.

We're looking into exactly that Frozen. However, your desire to pop up the vid in a lightbox or highside vs mine who wants to expand the journal and show it inline is a good illustration of why it would be smart to handle these needs as templates.

Once we get deeper into this I'll share some template code. I'll be honest however, this is not a top priority right now. Too many other projects and client work to finish first.

I'd suggest no, it would need you to insert rows into the journal table. Personally I'd live without that.

Also if I delete video from UVG it stays in journal. it is not good since users will continue to click the link to the video.

I would suggest deleting the journal entry after you delete the video.

Yes, I understand that. But it is to explain users to follow any instruction. Near to nobody read instructions.
And if user won't delete journal entry and somebody will press to the link in the joural and won't ee a video oreven notice that video was deleted he/she will think it is a bug.
I am pretty sure about this way of user thinking

Yes, it does make sense and we have thought about it before.  However, at this time your only option is to delete the journal entry.

    Yael,

It bears mention that the Admin can always delete journal entries. I think I'd actually prefer this.
