Can I just check - what are you guys using for your "Image Conversion Type" in the AS Settings? I have mine on None now, and it seems to resize .jpgs to smaller ones (the pp
If I set it to PNG conversion it keeps the original size .jpg and still makes all the thumbs in .png. Considering it makes thumbnails in .png in both cases I can't decide which one is better?

What is the default for new installs?
    thanks

Mine is set to png, which I'm pretty certain is the default.

I've known that we needed to do some clean up in this area. After doing some additional testing here is what actually happens.

Conversion Option Set to something other than what is uploaded.
If you upload a file that doesn't match the conversion type then it will keep the original version of the file named as "pp_uid.originalextension
When the profile handler needs to create/resize an image on the fly it will use the original file for best resolution.

Changing the Conversion option after a profile picture has been uploaded.
If you decide to change from one conversion option to another after a profile picture has been uploaded then it will create duplicates. We aren't going to change this. Since all profile pics are stored in a single directory it would be much easier for an admin to sort the directory or write a quick script to delete old profile pics. Again, not something that would be used all the time so we didn't see the benefit of adding the extra overhead for managing conversion type changes along with existing profile pics.

    One fix and future enhancement
Active Social 1.7 will no longer store the original uploaded file that doesn't correspond with the conversion type setting. In an upcoming release we will separate the profile pic, group pic and gallery settings.

PNG seems to work much better profile pics. The gallery format would be better with JPG options.

Did removing the original image as per the discussion above, in 1.7 occur? I still see two files for each image in my directory - a huge sized version which is (I believe) the original uploaded photo and then a smaller (in file size) version that is in PNG format (which is what I have my AS set to). What will happen if I remove the big jpgs? Will it switch over to using the png file and all will be well? Or will this cause problems?

    Thanks
