I've getting a growing number of complaints from users that they can't find other users using the Auto-complete feature of the PM system.   I don't seem to have this problem, but I'm an admin.   The users tend to find it confusing that they can PM anyone through the forum interface, but only certain people through the PM system.

What limits the auto-complete feature?   Is it limited to friends, people who have PM's enabled or a combination of both?

Is there an easy way (through the control panel or SQL) to globally enable PM's by default so that anyone can always PM anyone else unless the explicitly turn it off in their profile?

Any suggestions or clarifications are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

IMHO - It is limited by if users are verified (do you use this?) and the setting on the recipients preferences - ie. do they want to receive messages from ALL or just friends.
I run a scheduled task to set all new users to have their settings set to ALL (ie. all can post on wall, all can comment, post pics, send pms etc.)

Maybe a option would be to show all users and then show a message to the user why that user can't be PM'd, instead of not listing them - just a thought..

This is easily addressed using Recipient Restrictions under main settings.

Will,

I just had someone else mention this and after further review, it doesn't seem to be working right. I verified that I had "Recipient Restrictions" set to "All Users" and I logged on as a normal non-admin test user and I was not able to get auto-complete to work for anyone who was not a friend.

Anything else I can check that may be preventing this from working right?

Thanks

Will???

Is this a bug or is there something else I could be doing wrong on my side?

Thanks

Users still have the option to restrict messaging to friends only. If they have that set then they still will not appear in the list.

I realize that... It's under My Settings -> Notifications -> "Who Can Send You Messages".

I have a test user that was only friended with my main account. When the accounts were friended, the test user could find my main account using autocomplete. My main account (which is admin) appears to be able to see everyone using autocomplete.

I de-friended test, and test could no longer find my main account in autocomplete.

I re-friended test, and now I can send messages to my main account from the user directory, but test still can't find my main account using autocomplete even though it is friended.

So...

I have verified that the "overall" setting is complete in the AS control panel and I have verified that my individual accounts are correctly configured, but the auto-complete still is not working right.

I don't know if there is some legacy problems with my database or something, but it's definitely not working like it should.

I finally upgraded to 1.5.3 and sadly, this is still not resolved for me.

Users still can't PM non-friends despite my AS installation being configured to do so.
