Active Forums Update

by Will Morgenweck on 22 Sep 2009 11:09 PM

I don't even think Active Social 1.2 had been released for a full hour before we received the first request for an update on Active Forums.  We really do have some amazing and passionate customers that depend upon our products.  While we do have some new features and improvements for Active Forums, the fact remains that the current version is a very solid and stable product.  We are fortunate to have such a strong foundation to build from for some very exciting features in the upcoming release.

We received some very good feedback about communication and managing expectations during the last Active Social release cycle.  Which means I'm going to show a little more restraint when it comes to talking about upcoming features and also release schedules.  I will announce features and discuss capabilities once they are complete and can be viewed here or on our demo site.    For major releases we still may offer a beta or preview version to select customers.  However, our goal is going to be to release the product when it's ready and announce availability when it's posted.

I know some customers are expecting a feature list and rough estimate of when Active Forums will be released.  I will say that the next release of Active Forums has some very exciting features, major performance and scalability improvements.  Our development efforts are focused on Active Forums at the moment and I'm hoping to have the latest version running on this site very soon.

Hi Will

My #1 feature request would be for better support in the editor for embedding code. Support in the editor for this would be fantastic :

I did try a DNN editor that used it, however then I lost the image handling support the the AF editor does so well.

I agree. The editor for end users is a big request. I find that users are able to use some advanced features if I turn on the HTML input (Default DNN Editor) but this opens a can of worms that I dont want to allow for the site. In my opinion, it opens huge security risks, and allows users to hyperlink external websites which are unknown, and embedd products, and videos that may not be suitable. The Active Editor, I havent had much luck with, and decided the best method was to use the TextBox capability. Although with the text box capability, I had difficulty using the quote method and doesnt appear correctly. Only displays the text, not the same as if you used Active Editor, or Default DNN.. So you get a little, but then lose a little, and wish there was a way to really have more features with less security risks when it comes to users using the editor function on the forums.

I agree that holding off on the dates is a smart move. I definitely understand and remember all the problems you faced with the AS release. We all know you guys are hard at work, and you will release a great product, so just continue to test, and make sure things work.. Please include me, in the beta test. I am more than willing to help out anyway I can.

Thanks again.

I am very interested in the potential for AF to be used for a blog solution for AS, plugging in a blog tab and using like other third party tabs I have developed. From reading in the forums I think I am gathering that AF needs filter by asuid added as a feature to implement this.

Is that one feature a patch that perhaps you have already that could be released sooner?

With amazingly compassionate thanks,

Will

Can we merge topics? This will come in handy when a person replies to the same thread via email (MC) with some modification to the subject (especially the code).

I am glad someone else asked about AF's status and not me

If there is a threaded view you don't even have to split a topic (IMHO). One single topic and can have various topic discussions in it.

I need split topics and a option for "on/off" a forum in the listing for "not readed posts".

Can you give us a ballpark of when it will be released? I was recently struck by an idea(surprise surprise) and want to revamp my website but I would like to wait and work on some other thing if there are going to be some major changes in AF and soon.

I know you don't want to give dates but can you say by the end of October?

A couple of things that would make my life better:

1) fix the regex problems in the replace filter on complex regex.

2) allow a global 'turn off AJAX' in navigating pages to help with the PageBlaster issues and the bug where paging stays at the bottom of the page.

3) Make a filter processing be either on post (as it is now) or on display. OOn display would allow the user to save a text in the message like {mp3=mymusic.mp3} which could be replaced with the javascript for an embedded flash player. The reason it needs to be on display is so that forums that do not allow scripts can embed the script. This allows me to control what scripts are allowed and provide an easy way to use them.
