Community Role & Two-Stage Progressive Registration

by Will Morgenweck on 30 May 2009 06:41 AM

The community role allows you to modify the way DotNetNuke handles the verified registration process. The user will be added to the role you select for the Community Role once they have verified their account. This will allow the user to properly complete the registration process but prevent them from accessing items that you have selected for the Community Role.

Registration should be set to "Verified" in order for this feature to work properly.  Registration settings are available from the DotNetNuke Admin menu under the Site Settings option. Once the Site Settings page has loaded, expand the Advanced Settings section.  The first section will be "Security Settings".  Select the "Verified" user registration option.  Click "Update" at the bottom of the page to save your settings.

Create a new Role that will be used as your "Community Role".  You can name this role anything you like.  Return to the Active Social Control Panel after the role has been created.  The new role will appear in the drop down selection list.  Select the role that you created and click the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

The purpose of the Community Role is to add another level of security above the default Registered Users Role.  You can now select content and features that are only available to the community role you created.  For example, you may to restrict the user from creating forum topics until they verified their account.  Instead of giving Registered Users access to create forum topics you would specify the Community Role.

This method helps increase the number of users with completed profiles and reduces the number of fake accounts.

This feature is only available when used in conjunction with the Active Social Login and Sign-Up Views.
