Feature Overview - Points System

by Will M on 28 May 2008 05:16 PM

We have added a points system to the next version of Active Forums.  As you can see below, this is optional.  If you do not enable the points system, then all users will still receive a normal post count as they do now.  When you do have the points system enabled, the total points value will be used to calculate the rank instead of the post count.  We have also added an additional column in the database that will allow other applications to increase the Point value.  The API for third-party integration will be documented shortly after the release.

Great job Will! Appreciate the fact this capability was included, but adding the API is a HUGE win IMO. Can't wait to integrate this into my site.

Can we assign some one who acquires certain number of points to a particular role? Like acquire 100 points and become a subscriber. etc..

Thanks. I hope users will be able to see the potential of this capability.

Not for this release. However, you will have the ability to trust/unmoderate a user after a certain level.

This is so great! My site will really benefit from this feature.

How is the points stored in the DB - as one aggregated field? I would like to be able to show "This months hi-score" and let the point system be a contents among the users. THAT would really boost the activity level!!

    Is this possible?

The values are stored in the user details table. The fields are as follows: TopicCount, ReplyCount, ViewCount, AnswerCount and RewardPoints.

Great news Will, this is a feature we wanted 5 years ago. We needed more then than now but wanted to moderate all new members post until they achived a certain status. This will be a huge plus for eliminating those who only want to trash someone or promote another site or item.

Wow! That looks like a really nice and useful feature. Especially the possibility to access this via an API will make this quite a nice thing for me ;-) Can't wait to get my hands on 3.8/4.0!

I'd also like the possibility to have this time based, i.e. some way to check when the points were awarded through which kind of activity. If my understanding is correct, that won't be possible at the moment? ... well, I guess I could monitor the tables and create daily/weekly/monthly diffs in a separate table, if I have to ;-)

This is great, but can you restrict it to certain classes of users.

For example, we have a few users who are very active and valuable to us, but occasionally go off the deep end and we would want to moderate there posts indefintiely. Can we put these users in a seperate class?

But for the other 99% of users, we would be happy to use this trust/unmoderate feature.

You will have an admin setting for each user that will allow you to set them to Moderated. This will override any of the other settings.
