What is the rational behind not selling the source code of AF? You have a great product so why not allow customers that need some slight customization to use it? Thanks. Ivan |

Source code is available on a case-by-case basis. The price will also vary depending on your needs. Most customization can be handled by making modifications to the templates, without the need for source code. Keep in mind, that once you make changes to the source it makes upgrading much more difficult for you in the future. Also, Active Forums is not an Open Source product. We have had instances in the past where customers think that because they have the source code they can claim it as their own. Protecting our intellectual property and product brands is extremely important to the success and future growth of our business. Please feel free to contact our sales or support departments if you have any other questions. |

John, thanks for the response - it makes perfect sense. However, it even confuses me more because I don't understand why my particular "case-by-case" was met with "we don't sell our source code". My use case is pretty simple. I need a forum, I happen to be in the Real Estate business so localization is important, hence I need a small customization. My developers are ready to do it and they assure me it could be done in a way so we can continue to upgrade to new versions. On the intellectual property side - I represent a US based company so we comply with all licensing agreements we sign and obviously we don't have any plans to go into the forum development business. I hope you understand my confusion. Regards. Ivan |

we also bought the Enterprise version, which states "unlimited development license". Without the source code, we can't customize your posting form the way we want--we want to inject particular wording into the 'add new topic" posting 'body'--for example we'd like to add a drop down list as an additional control on that forum, with the functionality, upon the selection of a topic, to add specific wording to the body of the post. Please advise, or we'll have to modify the standard DNN forum, which is not as nice or as well put together as yours... Thanks |

"Unlimited Development License" means you can install the forums on as many staging sites as you need. It does not mean it includes source code. |

So how do we get access to the source? We'd like to modify the functionality when we add a new topic? Without this, we can't create a user friendly customization for our purpose. it's a quick change for us, and may have no value to you, but we'd be happy to share it back with you. We certainly aren't lookigng to sell a forum product, only to use your product, which as I noted, is more user friendly than even the latest DNN forum, and it apparently uses AJAX also. We'd appreciate any help you can provide. |
