Customizing the look and feel is pretty easy. All forum views are setup using templates that you can modify. You can also have multiple templates if you like. Other design aspects are managed through CSS. We have a very detailed skinning and template guide and several free skins available for download in the customer forums.

Will templates allow me to change change the actual HTML layout? My biggest gripe with forum modules is that they waste too much screen real estate.

Yes. The templates will allow you to change pretty much anything you like for the layout.
