Active Purchase Roadmap

Active Purchase is long overdue for an update.  The next release will be Active Purchase 2.0.  This will include support for Authorize.NET ARB.  There are also a few other minor enhancements.  The biggest news will be Active Purchase 3.0. 

Last weekend, Ben, Mollie, Amanda, Jason and I attended the Day of DotNetNuke in Tampa, FL.  We spent some time during the trip back discussing what we thought of the event and what were some common topics.  We all heard a common theme, "Lots of options for e-commerce, but none that do it really well." 

If there is one thing that Active Modules has been able to do really well, it is building complex modules that are easy to manage.  The original intent for Active Purchase was to fill a specific e-commerce niche.  Imagine taking the architecture from Active Social and applying it to Active Purchase.  You will end up with a top-notch e-commerce platform.   

Active Purchase 3.0 will introduce a full featured e-commerce platform with a robust product catalog and order management system.  Obviously this will all integrate with Active Social as well.

More details will be available after the release of Active Forums 4.2.

Will, great news...

Our company has been looking for this. The best thing out right now is ASPDNSF, but it's pretty costly and doesn't *quite get done what we need to get done.

Things to consider when implementing:

1) View permissions at any level of catalog. That is, based on DNN role, view can be restricted. [Let's say you wanted to break your store down into Distributors and General Public and Employees]. You may not ONLY want to have different pricing for different groups, but totally different product selection -- you may not even offer distributor level products to the general public, for instance. So, it's more than pricing, it's an availability thing.

2) Catalog only (no purchase) option.

3) Zoom image options -- on rollover or click or both

4) Scrolling "image only" bar that scrolls vertically or horizontally with just images, nothing else, but when you click takes you to that product

Hi Will,

I am glad to see that AP is gaining momentum (like all other AM modules) and I really hope that subscriptions are one of the features in Active Purchase 2.0

I agree with Marc. One of the things I've heard from my groups (using Active Social) is that they would like to manage their membership dues through their AS group. They would also like to manage paid events through their AS group and finally - they would like to sell merchandise through their AS group.

I've implemented both Catalook and ASPDNSF and tested almost all of the others. I welcome something new - especially if it's as well thought out as the other AM modules and is pre-integrated into AS.

Please consider posting your conceptual features for 3.0 so we can get some community feedback started. Monetizing all of this stuff is an important step for us operators and/or our clients.

Now if we could just get you guys to develop a decent banner management solution.....

Right now we are working on the product catalog. This includes all aspects of products and services. Once we get to a prototype I will certainly share more details and request feedback.

I recently attended a internet retailer conference and there were a lot of e-commerce offerings there. One that I thought was amazing with respect to ease of use and features was a new offering from www.bigcommerce.com. They have both a hosted and local version of their software. While it's not a dnn module, take a look at the functionality and ease of use. Something to model against you can create a free cart to check out the features.

Being able to be managed by non Developer/ web specialist
SEO friendly
Everything can be templated
Can manage RFQ (showing no pricing) and Purchase orders, still finding a lot of B2B want these.

I've been waiting a while for subscription support, and had to use others products in the meantime, but learned a few things from them. IMHO, there are some key design decisions for subscriptions -

1. Recurringi subscriptions
2. Assignment to multiple roles
3. Utility function to generate mailing list for renewal notification
4. Cancellation options

Really looking forward to what you come up with

Will,

Given your existing platforms of Active Purchase, Social and CRM, would you also consider extending Active Purchase to an Auction module. It would seem like a natural extension of your existing messaging / communication platforms coupled with Active Purchase to go from a catalog to an auction. Plus you would have a monopoly on DNN auctions since there is no viable alternative. Love to hear your thoughts.
