Video showing how ActiveModules.com was upgraded to DotNetNuke 5.0

by Will M on 02 Jan 2009 02:02 PM

I was reading some of the topics on the DotNetNuke forums earlier this week regarding issues with DotNetNuke 5.0.  With a community as large as DotNetNuke, you will always hear of a few failed upgrades or installs with every new release.  I was actually going to wait until later next week to upgrade our site.  After reading more negative posts than positive, I felt I needed to see what the problem was for myself.  Instead of explaining each step and issues we encountered I decided to record a video of the process.

I would like to point out a few things first.  Joe Brinkman from DotNetNuke Corp has watched the video and asked why I used the install package instead of the upgrade package.  I think he is going to provide some additional information on the differences between the two packages.  In most cases, I do use the upgrade package.  However, when we upgraded to 4.9.0 the upgrade failed for us using the upgrade only package.  I immediately tried the install package which corrected the issues we were having with the upgrade.  The only core modules we have installed on this site are Links, Text/HTML and UsersOnline.  I think this had something to do with our upgrade issues to 4.9.  If you use the install package, just make sure you do not overwrite your web.config file.

Please leave a comment below if you have any questions or would like me to provide further clarification.

Thanks,
Will

Hi Will,

In the video you mentioned that you didn't copy the ico-files because yours were already there. I believe that when you place your favicon.ico file in the appropriate portal-directory of your DNN installation, it will take your favicon file from that directory instead of the default DNN favicon.ico.

This way one is also able to have different favicons for differnt portals within a DNN installation.

Thanks Marc. I always use a single portal per DNN install. I wasn't aware of this capability.

Will,

Have you encountered any weird behaviro of the FckHtmlProvider while upgrading DNN? Or are you not using this provider? This one keeps on coming back and I just can't get passed this provider when testing the upgrade process.

Thanks in advance.

We are using the RADEditor provider. Didn't have any problems with that area. I did see a few posts over on the DNN Forums about the FCKEditor. I think you have to move the dll out of the /bin/providers director to the /bin directory.
