Active Social or Active Profile for DotNetNuke Social Networking

by Will M on 23 Nov 2008 01:52 PM

I know there is a bit of confusion regarding Active Social and Active Profile.  Hopefully this article will clear up the confusion.

------------------------------------------

Active Profile only addresses the user profile aspect of DotNetNuke Social Networking.

Active Social includes user profiles, groups, messaging, forums and a few other capabilities.  This will provide you with a complete social networking solution for DotNetNuke

--------------------------------------------

Active Profile allows users to create their own layout and choose which modules they want displayed on their profile page.

Active Social uses a profile layout that is defined by the site administrator.  The administrator controls the entire look and feel of the profile page.  The second release of Active Social will give the administrator the option to allow users to define the profile and/or choose which module will be displayed on the page.

-----------------------------------------------

Active Profile has an option for you to use the predefined profile fields or use profile fields from the DotNetNuke profile.

Active Social only uses fields from the DotNetNuke profile.

-----------------------------------------------

Active Profile and Active Social have the ability for you to create and mange friends.

-----------------------------------------------

Active Profile has predefined fields for searching profiles.

Active Social allows the administrator to choose which fields are used for the quick search and then choose additional fields for the advanced search.

------------------------------------------------

Active Profile provides one-way integration with Active Forums.  This means that Active Forums is aware of Active Profile but Active Profile isn't aware of Active Forums.

Active Social provides full integration with Active Forums.  This means that the profile aspect of Active Social and Active Forums is completely transparent to the end user.

-------------------------------------------------

Active Profile has a closed module architecture.  This makes it difficult for you to create your own modules or leverage third-party modules within a profile.

Active Social is built using dynamic templates.  This means you can create your own modules using ASP.NET/Javascript without the need for source code.

-------------------------------------------------

Please leave a comment if you would like further clarification or feel I have missed something.

Thanks,
Will

This right here... I'm very much looking forward to!!
Will there be a separate article or tutorial on how to properly integrate? Best practices and useful standards type of thing....

Will,

Are we still going to have the option of using Ventrian PM's with Active Social or will there be a conversion tool?

This all looks great!

Hi Will,

Does the profile bit of Active Social replace an existing Active Profile on a DNN installation or is it a distinct module?

@Jason - Messaging is integrated in several places throughout Active Social. For instance, friend request notifications are sent the messaging component which will then send you an email if you choose. It will be very difficult to integrate ventrian at that level.

@David - It will do nothing but improve your forums. You probably won't even notice the difference until you enable the Active Social integration.

@Rob - Active Social is a distinct module. If you are using Active Social then you will not be using Active Profile. Once you have everything setup for Active Social, it will in essence be replacing Active Profile. Does that answer your question?

So far, the offerings around social networking in the DNN community have not suited a large (100,000+) professional community. Instead, they have been more for the teen set -- lots of pre-set and rather amateurish (IMHO) things like birth dates, Avatars, and such. This is all well and good, but, again, not suited for a professional community.

So, it is my sincere hope that Active Social will be highly configurable and that it doesn't have the developer's idea of what a social community needs hard-wired into the product.

One thing that would be nice would be if more of us could be consulted on the product during its design stages. I have 17 years of experience in developing and leading one of the largest online professional communities in our sector, but have not had a pathway for providing input in the development of the product. I offered to beta the product have not heard back. Not complaining -- just wishing!

Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting release of the Active Social!

@yodarocks I agree 100%. Most modules in this area are focused more at the Boy Band Fan sites than professional sites. Having control over labels, features, and required fields is a must.

I think you will see very shortly just how flexible Active Social really is.

Active Social really is the result of gathering feedback from various customers with a wide variety of needs over the past year.

How shortly Will -- days, weeks months? When I was a young chap up in the mountains on holiday I asked a gentleman how far of a walk it was to the local pub. He replied, its just a block or two. Off we went to find it was acutally a 2 mile walk. The next time I saw the bloke I told him how wrong he was and he said that he wasn't it was really 2 country blocks. I guess I was thinking city blocks

Can you please elaborate on what “the first release” means? Does this mean everyone will have access, only curtain clients, only upgrades, or a few “random” selected people?

The official public, anyone can buy release will be mid January. We have already identified a few select customers that will be getting access to a beta release any day now. The release next week will be limited to a smaller audience. This is very similar to how we handled the release of Active Forums 4. This may change, but as of right now, after the beta group has access, all customers that qualify for the free upgrade would be next. This would be those customers that have Active Profile and a current Active Forums Enterprise subscription.

Frozen DNN and jbrunken. The beta testers we have lined up are customers that are basically rebuilding or starting new sites. Since you are both Enterprise customers you will still get early access to the release.

I swear, I swear I have one new website, which I have not made public because I am waiting for Active Social since you announced it. It has Ent AF on it. I can prove it, if that's how I can become eligible. It's all setup and all I have to do is unintall ST and upload AS. I can actually start giving you feedbacks asap. I will add the website info in the open ticket.

I hope I made my case, if not, I guess I will wait until the end of next week

I am sorry if this seems rude but I am starting to become annoyed with the lack of communication and delivery of this product. I have invested money into your product and i know that you would like to make sure i get the best service possible and you want me to get a product that will make the money i have spent with you worth the wait. but that does not excuse the lack of communication and false hope of delivery. if you are still “working out the bugs” or if you have ran into problems with development please keep us updated. when we post questions on this forum it should not lead to people begging for updates or rude emails like this.

i will continue to be a loyal customer and i will not discourage people from using your products.

thank you for you time and i hope this may spark some information to be released.
